Tokimeki Memorial was first released for the PC Engine CD on May 27, 1994. It also was re-released for the PC Engine Mini on March 19, 2020 in Japan only. A year later after the Original PC Engine release the game would receive a remake for the PlayStation titled Tokimeki Memorial: Forever With You.

Plot[]

The game's prologue begins with the protagonist (who can be named by the player) enrolling in Kirameki Private High School, which he chose in an attempt to reconnect with his childhood friend, Shiori Fujisaki, whom he has always had a crush on. On his first day of school, he meets Yoshio Saotome, who becomes his best friend, and the most popular guy in school: Rei Ijuin, the snobby grandson of Kirameki's chairman, who is beloved by the girls and hated by the boys. Soon, he also learns about Kirameki High's legend: couples tied under the school's Legendary Tree on the graduation day will be blessed with eternal happiness.

The rest of the plot is highly flexible depending on the player's actions, but generally takes place over the course of three high school years. Some fixed events are the Sports Festivals held annually, the school trip in the second year, and the introduction of Yumi Saotome, Yoshio's little sister and a freshman one year younger than the protagonist, in the second year. The game usually ends with the protagonist receiving a confession of love from one of the girls on graduation day.

Gameplay[]

Although Shiori is the main love interest, Tokimeki Memorial is non-linear, giving the player freedom to take whatever route they want. Most of the gameplay is dedicated to increasing the protagonist's stats, referred to as parameters, and scheduling dates with the different girls he can meet. The protagonist can also do other activities, such as joining a school club and playing mini-games.

Dates are brief, with the girl asking a question which, depending on the player's response, can increase or decrease her affinity for him, but all girls have at least four special cutscenes that can be seen by taking them to specific places on specific dates. By calling Yoshio, the player can check the girls' evaluation level, as well as get information about them, such as their phone number. Each girl's ending requires the player to have specific parameters, or even if she has the maximum evaluation level (referred to as being in Tokimeki State), it will still result in a bad ending.

The first game in the series is particularly notable for its "bomb" feature, where neglected, infrequently-dated girls would eventually become angry and gossip to their friends, severely reducing love meters across the board. In the middle of the game, when the number of known girls was high, these "bombs" became the primary concern of the player, forcing careful planning and strategies like round-robin dating. Although the feature was still present in the later games, it was considerably reduced in importance and the difficulty in avoiding it.
